When to visit Thailand

Pick a destination. Get monthly verdicts based on temperature, rainfall, and crowd-level data.

Coast strategy

Thailand has two rainy seasons that do not overlap fully. If your dates fall in the wrong Andaman month, head to the Gulf — and vice versa.

  • May–October: Gulf side wins (Koh Samui, Pha-ngan, Tao).
  • October–December: Andaman side wins (Phuket, Krabi, Lanta).
  • January–April: Both work; April hottest, January coolest.

FAQ

When is the best time to visit Thailand overall?

December through February — dry, cooler, low rainfall on both coasts. Prices and crowds peak too. The shoulder months (November and March) trade slightly less perfect weather for thinner crowds.

Can I beat the rain by picking the right coast?

Yes. The Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) is wet May–October. The Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Pha-ngan, Koh Tao) is wet September–December. Pick the opposite coast and you skip the worst rain in most months.

Is March really too hot?

In Bangkok and the central plains, yes. Daytime highs hit 35-36°C, humidity climbs, and the burning season smokes the north (Chiang Mai air quality often unhealthy in March). Coastal areas remain bearable thanks to sea breeze.

When does the Full Moon Party happen?

Once a month on Haad Rin (Koh Pha-ngan), aligned to the full moon. Worst rain September–November but the party runs year-round.
