Thailand’s 60-Day Visa Exemption (2024 Update)

By HiThai Editorial · Updated May 25, 2026

The Thai government changed everything in July 2024. Travelers from 93 countries can now stay for 60 days without a pre-arranged visa. This update makes long stays much easier for digital nomads and slow travelers.

The New 60-Day Rule

Old rules were strict. Previously, many visitors only received 30 days upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Now, the entry permit lasts two full months because the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wants to boost tourism revenue through longer stays.

The list of eligible countries is long. It includes citizens from the UK, Germany, France, and Japan. If you are flying into Don Mueang instead of Suvarnabhumi, the process remains exactly the same at the immigration counters.

Check your passport carefully. You need at least six months of validity remaining. Most airlines will deny boarding at your departure airport if your passport expires in less than 180 days.

Extending Your Stay

Sixty days might not be enough. You can extend your stay for another 30 days at any local immigration office. This extension costs 1,900 THB per person.

The process takes time. We recommend visiting the Chaeng Watthana Immigration office on a Tuesday morning because the queues are usually shorter than on Fridays or Mondays. You should arrive by 8:30 am to secure a spot in the queue before the midday rush begins.

  • Bring your original passport.
  • Provide a copy of your passport photo page.
  • Include a copy of your current arrival stamp.
  • Prepare 1,900 THB in cash for the fee.

Many expats prefer staying in Sukhumvit. You can find several visa agents near BTS Asok who handle these filings for a small service fee.

Common Reasons for Refusal

Immigration officers have discretion. Even with the new rules, they can deny entry if they suspect you are working illegally. They often look for signs of intent to stay permanently without the correct long-term visa.

Proof of funds is a real factor. While they rarely ask every traveler, an officer might request to see 20,000 THB in cash or equivalent bank statements if your travel history looks suspicious. We saw a traveler at Phuket International Airport get questioned because he had five entry stamps within a single year.

Avoid looking lost. Carry a printed copy of your return flight booking. If you do not have a flight out of Thailand, the airline might prevent you from boarding in your home country.

Digital Nomads and Remote Work

The 60-day exemption is great for testing the waters. You can live in a condo near BTS Thong Lo while you decide if you need a formal Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). The DTV allows for much longer stays if you work remotely for a company outside of Thailand.

The DTV costs roughly 10,000 THB depending on the embassy. It is a different beast than the visa exemption. While the exemption is for tourists, the DTV is specifically designed for people earning income from abroad.

Many people use the first 60 days to scout neighborhoods. They check the internet speeds in Chiang Mai or the proximity of cafes in Ari before committing to a long-term lease.

Navigating the Airports

Suvarnabhumi is massive. Follow the signs for "Immigration" immediately after you clear customs. The walk from the baggage carousel to the counters can take 15 minutes if you are moving slowly.

Don Mueang is smaller. It feels much more manageable for budget travelers flying AirAsia or Nok Air. However, the immigration lines here can still get quite long during the peak evening arrival windows.

Keep your documents organized. Use a small folder for your boarding pass and passport copies. Finding a crumpled piece of paper while an officer waits can cause unnecessary stress.
