Tips for buying a motorcycle in Thailand

In this article I am prepared to share information and give a couple of tips which will be helpful to those who want to buy a motorcycle in Thailand both in a store and from hand. This procedure also applies to other equipment. This information can be used by tourists visiting the country and wishing to be mobile when sightseeing its natural attractions. Also, this information will help to sell the motorcycle when leaving the country. About all the documents required when buying-selling a motorcycle, I will tell you below.

Before you buy a bike in Thailand, you need:

    • with the help of the internet to find a suitable model (I can suggest an excellent English-speaking site ads in Thailand)
    • met with the seller to see the bike

If the bike is suitable, then the process of buying it takes place. The reissue procedure takes place in any store that sells new bikes. Buy a motorcycle in Thailand from a local resident is much easier than from a foreigner. All locals know what documents are required to reissue the bike and will provide the buyer with the necessary package including:

1. greenbook or green book, which includes:

  • model;
  • year of manufacture
  • bike owner’s name

2. printout of the relevant signed contract to reissue the motorcycle;

3. a copy of Thai license (can be international CIS license) that indicates:

    • residence address of the seller

his passport number.

When buying a motorcycle from a foreigner, both parties to the transaction will need to obtain a resident certificate from the immigration office. Deciding to buy a bike in Thailand, the buyer should understand that in order to reissue it in the store, they will need:

  • pay an amount up to 1000 baht, depending on the store chosen;
  • wait 7-30 days to complete the process.

Bike reissue

When reissuing a motorcycle, you can change the license plate, although this is not mandatory. A license plate with the same digits can be obtained for a fee. After the reissue, the customer can take the greenbook back to the store with his/her name already on it.

The procedure for reissuing the motorcycle to the new owner is not mandatory. It is enough to take the package of documents for the bike from the local resident, which can then also be transferred to the new buyer. The foreign seller will need to come to the store, where he will sign as confirmation of the fact of sale. Without registering the motorcycle for himself, the new owner can use it. For the subsequent sale of the motorcycle, the new owner is brought to the same store. If you do not wish to purchase a motorcycle for personal use, a better idea would be bike rental in Thailand.

You should not register your purchased motorcycle in your own name if you intend to use it exclusively in Thailand for a while and then sell it.
