Touristy Pattaya is an urban agglomeration consisting of itself and several satellite towns which are so closely merged with the metropolis that the tourists consider them as part of the same whole. – English transliteration of the Thai name looks like “Chom Tien” or “Jomtien” – is also a separate administrative unit, located three kilometers south of central Pattaya. Jomtien Beach stretches a narrow strip along the north shore of the bay, starting at Cape Pattaya and ending at Sath Heep town, for a full five kilometers. A little further south, about two kilometers away, is a small town for loving tourists called Mimosa. Along the coastline there is a highway. It and the beach are separated by a narrow strip of palm forest. Only to the north, where Dongtan Beach is conventionally located, does the highway turn into a pedestrian zone.

The highway that separates the beach area from the residential area is not too busy, but because of it hotels near Jomtien Beach in Pattaya are considered to stand on the second line, and therefore they are cheaper. All the infrastructure of this area is concentrated along the alleys, perpendicular to the highway. They are all named Jomtien and the number increases from north to south. The only lane overlooking Sukhumvit Road is called Boonkanjana, and it is located about midway.

Everything in Jomtien that is attractive to tourists is in a strip 100-200 meters wide. From there, all the way to Sukhumvit Road, are fields and wasteland, with only a few high-rise buildings.

Also, there are no markets and complexes where you can combine shopping with entertainment. Everything else – massage parlors, restaurants with any cuisine – French, Italian, Russian, as well as travel agencies and a wide range of hotels – from modern pompous high-rise buildings to democratic gesthouses – are there. In Jomtien you can go to an internet cafe, hire a bike, go to small stores selling souvenirs, clothes and anything you may need on the beach.

When choosing a shelter of this format should be borne in mind that it is usually located furthest from the sea (10 minutes walk) and surrounded by drinking establishments of varying degrees of “frozen”.

Beach and sea

Jomtien Beach, almost like the northern Pratamnak, is one of the most tranquil places in passionate Pattaya. There is no stone jungle, no constant stream of cars and motorcycles on the streets. It’s a place where you can just walk around, like somewhere in Kabardinka near Gelendzhik.

The coastal area is considered the cleanest among the other Pattaya beaches, not counting the Military – Sai Kaew Beach, though you won’t be able to notice any drastic differences from the same Pattaya Beach. The sand is regular, yellowish, moderately trampled. The crystal clear water, as on Ko Lan Island, you will not find, too. It’s best to relax there, lying on a lounger or taking a stroll in the evenings.

All the beach facilities are in the usual range. There’s a full range of water activities, sun loungers, massage parlors, cafes and souvenir shops. If the peddlers annoy you, head to Dongtan. Where the highway ends and the pedestrian zone begins, there are hardly any.

How to get there

Transfer

Direct bus

Go straight to Jomtien Beach in Pattaya from Suvarnabhumi Airport, no transfer to Central Pattaya. There is a separate bus directly to Thappraya Bus Station, which is at the intersection of Thappraya and Thepprasit streets. From there, it’s about half a kilometer south to Jomtien Sai 2, a street that runs parallel to the Jomtiensainueng coastal highway. Bus+songteo

If the nearest bus from Bangkok airport goes to North Pattaya Bus Station (Nakhon Chai Oe), you can use the municipal songteo. The main reference point is Tepprazit Street, south of which Jomtien begins. The sungteo turn off at Jomtien Sai 2 and go to Chaiapriuek Street, dropping off and picking up passengers on the way. Then turn around and go back. The distance from each stop to the sea is no more than half a kilometer.
