Kamala Beach in Phuket – A relaxing vacation with children by the sea

Phuket’s Kamala Beach is one of the top three most popular vacation spots on the island and is well suited for a quiet vacation with children by the sea. Its peculiarity is that the coastal highway goes eastward and does not divide the beach itself and the residential area. Because of this there are hotels that can really be attributed to the first line.

And this place is much quieter than others, where cars and motorcycles are constantly scurrying around, filling the air with exhaust and noise. Kamala Beach is equidistant from Phuket Airport, and from Phuket Town, about twenty kilometers to them. The total length of the beach is about one and a half kilometers, and the width of the strip of sand is from five to thirty meters.

Formally, Kamala Beach in Phuket can be divided into three parts.

    1. South. On the south side the strip of sand is no wider than five meters. It is where the piers for the tour boats are and therefore the water is quite dirty and there are no umbrellas or sun loungers on the shore.

The south strip is not wider than five meters.

  1. Central. Kamala Beach itself begins after the road turns east. Geographically, it is the central part of the beach. There are a lot of people on all days, deckchairs and umbrellas stand like soldiers on parade – in several rows. All kinds of water activities are available, from bananas and kite boats to jet skis and water skis. Right along the strip of sand are cafes and restaurants, as well as massage parlors.
  2. North. The northern part of the beach is the most quiet, there are not too many tourists, but they are the guests of the first line hotels. Visitors are not persecuted, they can also use the sun beds and umbrellas. According to many family tourists, the northern Kamala is the best place to relax and swim.

Natural conditions at Kamala Beach

Long the entire shoreline at Kamala Beach there are sprawling palms and casuarins (horsetail plants). They cover the sand with thick shade until noon. At high tide, the strip of sand narrows to just a few meters, so you can dive into the sea with a bang. The sand itself is grayish, with more and more small stones appearing in it as you move southward.

The entrance to the sea is very shallow in the south and north of the beach, with the southern part being shallower, which is why it is used for boat parking. If you want to go deeper, then go to the central part, but at low tide, it is also shallow. It is safe to enter the water: there are no large stones and coral fragments.

The color of the water changes depending on the time of day. In the morning, when the rays glide across the surface of the sea, it is bright turquoise. In the afternoon and evening, it turns grayish because of the sand on the bottom. Which is an optical illusion, the water is as gentle and clear as the beaches of Kata or Surin.

A path runs along the shore. It separates the social enterprises – cafes, souvenir shops – from the beach. In the northern part of the beach, the hotel doors open onto this path. A little farther from the sea, next to the police station, there are sellers of hot cakes and ice cream – the so-called makashnitsa. It’s cheaper there than in cafes, but lunch on a shady veranda overlooking the sea looks more attractive. The average bill at the beach cafe is about five hundred baht for two people.
